Module Learning Strategies
On-line resources and a core text will demonstrate and explain the core statistical concepts and techniques and will develop knowledge in the use of a suitable statistical package. The learning process will be supplemented by integrated exercises to provide an opportunity to practise the techniques and help reinforce understanding.
In approaching the assessment, students are required to show the tutor sections of their work regularly. This will allow the tutor to give formative feedback throughout the development of the assessment and aid understanding. Throughout to support the assignment examples and similar case studies will be provided to aid the student in developing their thinking.

Module Indicative Content
Defining survey objectives- what are the aims of this survey?
Sampling strategies-who to ask, how many to ask, how to ask.
Questionnaire design (to include OMR and web based) and the use of various attitude scales to measure opinions and attitudes including reliability measures.
Data entry, exploratory data analysis and the presentation and interpretation of tables, percentages and descriptive statistics using a statistics package e.g. SPSS.
Introduction to sampling theory. Confidence intervals for means and proportions. Hypothesis testing (parametric & non-parametric).
Correlation and Regression.
Using graphical output to display results and relationships.
Report writing and presentation.
Module Additional Assessment Details
1. Report 25% assessing learning outcome 1 devising a research specification giving details of how you would conduct a survey of your choice on a major scale and briefly discuss the ethics of conducting this research.
2. Report 75% assessing Learning Outcomes 2 - 4 detailing the analysis, results and conclusions of the survey.
Report 2 will be the final assessment point.
