In class phased test (1 hour) weighted at 25% assessing learning outcomes 1 and 2.
An examination (1.5 hours) weighted at 75% assessing Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3.

Atomic and electronic structure of materials
Bonding in materials
Physical properties - electrical, thermal, mechanical
Introduction to relationship between structure and properties
Module Learning Strategies
Learning takes place with 1 x 2 hour lecture and 2 x 1 hour tutorial/laboratory session each week
Module Resources
Basic Mechanical testing and materials examination equipment - tensile, hardness, impact, stereo and metallographic microscopes.
Module Special Admissions Requirements
Student must be registered on the Foundation Year in Engineering.
