Module Additional Assessment Details
100% Coursework comprising:
1) An individual study of the transport issues related to a particular town, with redesign of the transport system to allow more efficient intermodal public transport to take place Weighting 80% (4000 words) (LO 1&2)
2) A 10 minute presentation to the class of the main suggested changes and improvements in the selected town, weighting 20% (LO 1&3)
Module Indicative Content
The module will give an introduction to Intermodal Transportation issues and these will include: The history of different modes of transport include road, rail, air and waterways. Methods of transferring people and goods between modes: car, taxis, buses, rail air, sea, trans, light rapid transit, metro and underground. Interchange terminal design. Baggage handling. Through ticketing. Customer information systems. Sources of motive power for transportation. Affect of pollution from different transport types. Transport capacity and operating cycle calculations. Assessment of capacity requirements. Air transport regulations and deregulation. Operational costing and transport economics. Low cost carriers versus traditional carriers. Paratransit concepts and systems. Road congestion and pricing. Congestion charging in cities. Freight transport, container systems, pricing.
Module Learning Strategies
Lectures (24 hours) will form the main teaching activity. Learning will be enhanced by mini-projects which will be supported by tutorials (12 hours). (1:n) (1:20)
