INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module introduces students to fundamental ideas relating to mechanical technology and thermodynamics:-
1. Free body diagram, physical systems of units, Newton’s 2nd law - application to different problems, scalar and vector quantities, balancing problems, Basic introduction to vibration problems, Bending stress due to bending, Shear stress due to bending, Beam deflection analysis using 'standard' formulae and commercial software, Torsion.
2. Thermodynamic properties and processes, property charts and tables, Zeroth, 1st, and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics. State and equilibrium, cycles, open and closed systems, phase change of pure substances, Ideal gas equation of state, internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, specific heat, reversible and irreversible processes.
