Module Indicative Content
Material Properties for Performance - Moduli, key stresses, hardness, thermal expansivity, conductivity & mass. Applications examples to emphasise these.
Failure Mechanisms - Fracture, fatigue, creep, thermal shock
Classes of Material - Monolithic, composites and coatings
Material Optimization - Heat treatment, microstructural engineering
Material Selection - Strategies, tools and case studies
Solid Modelling - Advanced shape creation techniques. Effective use of parametric design techniques. Advanced assembly. Mechanism design. Animation.
Design Elements - A consideration of a range of standard design elements such as bearings, gears, belts etc. The calculations that are involved in ensuring they are correctly sized and specified.
Design for manufacture - Basic understanding of different design processes such as casting, injection moulding, sheet metal and machined components. How does the manufacturing process affect the design? How are designs adjusted to accommodate different assembly methods?
