100% Coursework (Portfolio of Assessment)
In-class writing test (45 minutes, 25%, learning outcome 1)
This writing test in exam conditions will be based on topics researched and written about during the module.
Minutes of meetings (25%, learning outcome 2)
This will consist of a small portfolio of minutes taken from simulated professional meetings in class.
Individual presentation (approx 5 minutes, 25%, learning outcomes 1, 2)
The presentation will be on a technical/professional topic similar to those covered in class. It will typically last for about 5 minutes.
In-class phone test (25%, learning outcome 2)
You will be assessed on your performance during in-class phoning activities.
Module Indicative Content
You will practise listening, speaking, reading and writing in technical and professional contexts. Typical activities are described below:
1. Listening
You will listen to things a variety of listening inputs on technical and professional subjects. You will also make phone calls on professional and/or technical subjects.
2. Speaking
You will give group presentations and participate in professional meetings. You will also make phone calls on professional and/or technical subjects.
3. Reading
You will read professional or technical sources, extract relevant information from them and then apply it to your presentation or written exam.
4. Writing
You will write about professional and technical subjects. You will also compose minutes of professional meetings.
Module Learning Strategies
Normally, we¿ll have 12 hours class contact time each week, working in workshop mode. We will use a variety of teaching and learning methods such as: pair discussion, team work, group debates, simulated formal meetings, minute-writing sessions, student presentations, audio-visual inputs, short tutor lectures and tutorials. The emphasis is on participation and active involvement.
The in-class activities will be supplemented by independent study outside class, doing such things as reading relevant texts, writing on professional and technical subjects, carrying out specific language tasks, etc.
