The subjects listed below builds a strong understanding of basic fluid flow principles on which vehicle aerodynamic design decisions such as airflow over wings and spoilers can be based:
Major classes of equations in fluid mechanics
Parabolic, Elliptic and Hyperbolic equations in CFD
Methods of numerical solution and boundary conditions
Conservation equations for fluid flow
Finite Difference methods
Compressible flows: artificial viscosity, Finite-volume formulation flux-corrected transport.
Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations
DNS for Incompressible Flow:
Tensor notation, Navier-Stokes Equations, Staggered grid, Pressure correction, Steady and Unsteady Flow
DNS, LES and turbulence modelling
Averaged Navier-Stokes equations.
Turbulent viscosity and related closures.
Reynolds stress closures.
Near-wall flows and boundary layers
Introduction to Phoenics CFD software
Meshing, Boundary conditions, Solution techniques.
Reading and manipulating results.
Turbulence modelling. Wall-bounded flows. Multiphase flows. Validation.
Case studies in CFD application to Aerodynamics
Module Additional Assessment Details
50% Examination assessing learning outcome 2, 50% in course assessment assessing learning outcome 1 and 3. Practical exercises will be set for each major section of the module.
Module Learning Strategies
1 hour per week will comprise a formal lecture.
2 hours per week will take place in Faculty laboratories where demonstrations, practical exercises and formal labworks will be undertaken.
