Module Learning Strategies
1 hour per week will comprise a formal lecture.
2 hours per week will take place in Faculty laboratories where demonstrations, practical exercises and formal lab-works will be undertaken.

50% 2 hours Examination, which assess learning outcomes 1.

Module Indicative Content
Heat Transfer in Engineering
Conduction Heat Transfer, Kirchoff's Law of steady state conduction heat transfer, the effect of material type, dimensions and thermal conditions. Convective heat transfer, Free and Forced convection. Radiation exchange of heat, the effect of emissivity and shape factor on radiation.
Theory of Heat Exchangers
Classification of heat exchangers according to design, flow patterns, and applications. Performance evaluation of heat exchangers, the LMTD method, the F-chart method and the Effectiveness-NTU method. Fins, or extended surfaces and their use in Heat exchangers.
Thermal analysis Project
Energy audit, thermal performance and flow/pumping requirements analysis and the philosophy of striking a compromise in selecting the optimum operating conditions. Evaluation of two cases, a. the Peltier device heating/cooling characteristics, and b. thermal performance of a Heat pump.
Module Resources
