Module Details
Module Indicative Content
A case study (more than one case study is acceptable) will be used to enable the students to meet and study the following advanced engineering design principles:

- Remote collaborative design (synchronous and asynchronous)
- Supply chain management
- Comprehensive D4X analysis
- Quality in Design
- Design of Experiments in design
- Optimization in design
- Role of the lead design engineer
- Six-sigma tools used in design
- Role of the Chartered Engineer in the Quality Management System of a design team
- Cost and Value analysis.
Module Additional Assessment Details
100% in-course assessment presented in the form of a portfolio.
Module Learning Strategies
The module will contain a total of 36 hours class contact. However, this may not be distributed evenly across the semester as the intention is for the students to present their findings in small seminars. Hence it is likely that there will be a small number of 2 hour lectures (to the whole cohort) throughout the semester supported by a number of 1 hour seminars of smaller groups. In this manner independent learning will be targeted and directed.
Module Texts
Text books and journals relevant to the topics covered in the individual case study(ies)
Module Resources
All Laboratories
Manufacturing facilities
Rapid prototyping facilities
Design Studios
Library
Module Special Admissions Requirements
Must have studied Level 5 Mechanical Engineering Design or an equivalent.
