Module Learning Strategies
This module is essentially workshop based with independent reading/on-line tutorial support and independent experimentation and practice.
The lectures will study the forms of edit and explain the reasoning behind why we cut and the effect it has on the audience. Film language will be studied and practiced in technical exercises.
The technical exercises will follow the FCP tutorials and explain/practice the use of the editing tools ranging from project/file management, use of bins, cutting, fades an dissolves, special effects, track laying, audio, titling, capturing and exporting.
Module Indicative Content
This module explores the technical and creative applications of Final Cut Pro in Post Production. The ability to understand and master the application of post-production editing is crucial in film-making. This module aims to demonstrate the functions and show the possibilities of the operating system as a means of identifying the creative nature of editing.
The module will study creative editing for elements such as: sound, music, pace, narrative, continuity, parallel action, structure and fragmentation as a means of understanding that `there has to be a reason? to cut. Film editing techniques for drama, documentary, advertising, commercials, features, shorts and experimental film will be analysed and practiced through the exercises and practical content.
Module Additional Assessment Details
You will present a body of coursework for assessment, including: A DVD documenting each of the lessons/exercises and techniques experienced from FCP.
NB: Having completed the module students have the option of taking the Apple Final Cut Pro Level One Certification exam to gain an external recognised qualification as well as the 15 credits.
