Module Indicative Content
This module explores the technical and creative applications of creative sound recording and sound design in Post Production. The ability to understand and master the application of sound as an emotive and creative communication tool is crucial in film-making. This module aims to demonstrate the practical functions and show the possibilities of the equipment/resources and facilities available within sound production.
The module will study creative sound in film re: sound fx, atmos, ambient, foley, use of music, creation of pace, narrative, continuity, parallel action, structure and fragmentation as a means of creative communication. Sound recording techniques for drama, documentary, advertising, commercials, features, shorts and experimental film will be analysed and practiced through the exercises and project content.
Module Additional Assessment Details
COURSEWORK - weighted at 100%.
You will present a body of coursework for assessment, including: A DVD/CD documenting each of the lessons/exercises and techniques experienced from sound recording/production and post-production.
DVD submission to show: Edited sequence of Timeline cuts / cross fades / dissolves / audio track laying / graphics/titles / rendering / multiple video tracks / sound and visual fx./ output sourcing to tape and DVD.
Module Learning Strategies
This module is based around introduction and analytical lectures followed by practical workshops allowing independent reading/on-line tutorial support and experimentation and practice in sound recording and post production sound design.
The lectures will study the forms and functions of sound and critically review the creative use of sound design in film analysing the effect it has on the audience. Sound production will be studied and practiced in technical exercises.
The technical exercises will cover sound recording of voice/musical sounds/effects on location and studio and follow the post production Protools tutorials to practice the use of the post production edit suites working on project/file management, use of FX, track laying, cross fades, perspective, mono/stereo use, special effect, distortion, capturing and exporting.
