Module Indicative Content
This module aims to provide you with an opportunity to improve the skills and techniques required to generate and develop a range of creative ideas and concepts for genre-specific production such as short drama/documentary; advertising and commercial film production and experimental film. You will be involved in a number of individual and group exercises studying the concept of creativity, ideas generation, inspiration, influence, semiotics, metaphorical meaning and themes. A range of production and group exercises will be undertaken & the learning experience will involve you extensively in ideas/concept techniques and communication skills. You will be encouraged to develop a pro-active approach to research, lateral thinking and problem solving.
This module explores the importance of lateral thinking and `stepping outside ones comfort zone' as a means of personal development; this is achieved via screening films' students would not normally view and discussing the concept; context and ideas generation. The ability to understand and develop a range of ideas from a variety of sources and influences is crucial to a developing filmmaker. This module aims to develop your ability to produce a range of film ideas from a given starting point. Each screening will, encourage independent thought, opinion and debate whilst highlighting specific creative ideas. Students will produce a range of `initial concepts' from each screening that will be used to inform their own practice.
In addition to illustrated talks, screenings, visits and informal discussion groups, you will participate in exercises designed to help you understand the methods and conventions by which you can research, evaluate and communicate your interest in both the practice and history/theory of art, design and film. You will learn how to use external research resources, and will also acquire the IT skills you need for the gathering and presenting of information in an academic context. You will carry out research-based, specialist projects, aimed at producing written and visual findings to present to staff and students. You will carry out a series of short exercises on understanding research methods as means of creating ideas, participating in group debates and applying visual and text based thoughts and ideas to hard copy.
