Anatomy and physiology of body organs/systems related to the labour; Mechanism of labour; Pharmacology- kinetics and dynamics and drugs used in labour; `First Class Delivery'; Needs, care and management and role of the midwife during labour; Midwifery Process, Maternal and fetal assessment during labour, Pain: psychology and relief; Nutrition and fluid balance; Active birth; Midwifery skills used during labour and immediately following birth; Introduction to cardiotocography; Examination following birth; Administration of medicines: theory and practice; Legal and ethical issues related to normal labour.

Module Additional Assessment Details
Summative assessment:
Students will present a poster based on an aspect of learning related to a PBL scenario and provide oral justification for the content of the poster weighted at 100% (Learning outcomes 1 - 4). Maximum time allowed 20 minutes.

All students must adhere to the Faculty of Health and Science Policy on Confidentiality and Ethical Issues in Academic Practice and Learning.

Formative assessment:
Students will be given guidance in the preparation and presentation of a poster and formative feedback will be given.
Attainment of relevant clinical practice outcomes.
