In addition to the module hours, clinical practice must be undertaken in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements (Standard 12)
Module Indicative Content
Anatomy and physiology: anatomy and physiology applied to normal childbirth and midwifery practice
Clinical skills necessary for basic midwifery care

Professional, Legal and Ethical Issues: administration of medicines, confidentiality; record keeping; accountability and responsibility; informed choice and consent; discrimination and anti-discriminatory practice; the use of portfolio reflection, reflective practice and continuing professional development in practice.

Evidence based practice: introduction to evidence-based practice; introduction to research and searching for evidence; formulating clinical questions; the evidence-based practitioner; clinical skills used in normal midwifery practice including effective communication in the antenatal, intranatal and postnatal periods. Care of the neonate.

Multidisciplinary/interprofessional working: identifying appropriate professionals and agencies involved in the provision of care for a woman, her baby and family throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium

Mandatory skills: including moving and handling, infection control, asepsis, food hygiene, fire lecture, personal protection, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, drug calculations.
Module Additional Assessment Details
A portfolio made up of the following elements:

Assessment of practice documentation demonstrating achievement of practice outcomes - 10% (Learning outcome 4)

Viva voce examination - 30 minutes - 90% (Learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3)

Both elements of assessment must be passed
