Module Indicative Content
Effective nursing and midwifery practice: principles of nursing care; common medical disorders and surgical conditions seen in childbearing women and women of childbearing age - care, management and prevention; genetics; gynaecological conditions; fertility issues, loss and bereavement; human anatomy and pathophysiology; mortality and morbidity; support groups

Professional, legal and ethical practice: practice in accordance with NMC standards, legal and ethical frameworks relating to general surgery and medicine; role of healthcare professionals and agencies related to nursing; collaborative multi-professional working, consultation and referral

Developing the individual midwife and others: effective communication skills in caring for women with medical, surgical and gynaecological conditions

Achieving care through evaluation and research: evidence-based practice related to care of patients with medical, surgical and gynaecological conditions.

With changes to the demographics of childbearing women in the UK and advanced medical technologies, an understanding of the effect of chronic conditions on pregnancy and pregnancy on the condition is essential to the midwife. This module focuses on common medical and surgical conditions experienced by women of childbearing age and is complemented by clinical experience in medical and surgical wards and in general theatres.
