In addition to the module hours, clinical practice must be undertaken in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements (Standard 12)
Module Indicative Content
Anatomy and physiology: revise the anatomy and physiology related to clinical skills used in normal midwifery practice during antenatal, intra-partum, post- partum and neonatal period including diagnosis of pregnancy, antenatal examination, assessment of maternal and fetal wellbeing, assessment of wellbeing and management of care during labour, care of the neonate at and after birth, neonatal screening, reproductive screening and sexual health.

Professional, legal and ethical issues: the professional, legal and ethical framework underpinning midwifery practice including NMC Rules, standards and guidelines, supervision of midwifery practice, administration of medicines, confidentiality, accountability and responsibility, informed choice and consent. The use of portfolio and continuing professional development in practice.


Evidence based midwifery practice: related to clinical skills used in normal midwifery practice including effective communication, antenatal and neonatal screening, parent -education management of labour, infant feeding and immunisation.


Multi-disciplinary / inter-professional working: identifying appropriate professionals and agencies involved in the provision of care for a woman, her baby and family throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium including those related to gender violence and child protection.


Mandatory skills: including moving and handling, infection control, food hygiene, fire lecture, personal protection, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, drug calculations.
Module Additional Assessment Details
A portfolio made up of the following elements:
Assessment of practice documentation demonstrating achievement of practice outcomes - weighted at 10% (addressing LO 4)
Viva voce examination - 30 minutes - weighted at 90% (addressing LO 1, 2, 3).

Both elements of assessment must be passed
