Anatomy and physiology:
Anatomy and physiology applied to normal childbearing (fertility and prenatal, intranatal, postnatal periods and the neonate)

Professional, legal and ethical issues:
Midwifery legislation, NMC Documents, Introduction to ethics and current ethical issues in practice, History of midwifery, Philosophy of midwifery, Informed decision making, legal and ethical issues relating to research

Evidence based practice:
Fertility, Preconception care, Antenatal care, Minor disorders of pregnancy, Intrapartum care, Postnatal care, Neonatal care, Public health issues (Smoking cessation, breast examination, cervical screening, Sexually transmitted infections, substance misuse, domestic violence), Social issues impacting midwifery practice. Cultural issues related to midwifery practice
Genetics - Inheritance, genetic services, communicating genetic information, genetic and other factors in maintaining health, utility and limitations of genetic testing
Searching for evidence, the evidence-based practitioner, the hierarchy of evidence in health care, research designs in health, advanced searching skills, introduction to the skills of critical appraisal

Multi-disciplinary / inter-professional working: Supervision of Midwives, Clinical governance, Risk management. Referral and liaison with other health professionals.
