Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of conditions affecting the ill neonate
Nutrition and fluid balance
Monitoring and managing blood glucose levels

Module Additional Assessment Details
The assessment strategy for this module involves formative and summative methods.

The summative assessments for this module include:
- Completion of clinical competencies (0% weighted). Marked as `Pass or Fail¿, (assessing LO's 1 and 3)
- Completion of a multiple choice question examination (MCQ). A pass mark of 80% is required. The MCQ is weighted as 20% of the total module mark, (assessing LO's 2 and 3)
- Completion of the Neonatal Life Support (NLS) course, run by the Resuscitation Council UK. This is a prerequisite of the module and is either a `Pass or Fail¿, (assessing LO 5)
- Research, write and present an educational package on a subjected related to Neonatal Intensive Care. The presentation must also include the rationale for choice, its relevance to clinical practice and who the educational package is intended for, e.g. colleagues, parents, junior doctors or student nurses/midwives. The presentation will be 15 minutes long. This is weighted as 40% of the total module mark, (assessing LO 4)
- Completion of a 60 minute written examination. A pass mark of 40% is required. This is weighted as 40% of the total module mark (assessing LO 3)
- Undertake an Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OCSE) pertaining to the management of the neonate in an intensive care setting. (0% weighted) Marked as `Pass or Fail¿, (assessing LO's 1, 3 and 5)

All elements of the summative assessments must be passed in order to successfully complete the module.
Formative assessment will be provided to all students by means of feedback during the taught element of the module, as well as individual tutorial support. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake mock MCQ papers and receive formative feedback following this.

During their supervised clinical practice students will have a mentor, who they must meet with regularly to discuss progress, concerns, learning opportunities and further areas of development.
