Indicative Content
The indicative content of this module will include:

Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of conditions affecting the ill neonate
Blood glucose monitoring
Breastfeeding
Thermal care
Admission transfer and discharge
Respiratory and airway management
Fluid balance management,
Systemic infections
Professional responsibilities, e.g. accountability, documentation and clinical governance
Nutrition
Care of parents and families
Pain assessment
Neonatal screening
Medicines administration
Hygiene and infection control
Skin assessment and care
Neurological and neonatal abstinence syndrome
Multidisciplinary team working and communication

Additional Assessment Details
The assessment strategy for this module involves formative and summative methods.

The summative assessments include:
- Completion of clinical competencies, which will be marked as either a 'Pass or Fail', (assessing LO's 2 and 3)
- A 20 minute assessed presentation on an aspect of neonatal care. This presentation is weighted as 40% of the total module mark, (assessing LOs 3 and 4)
- Completion of a 60 minute written examination. A pass mark of 40% is required. This examination is weighted as 60% of the total module mark (assessing LO's 1, 2 and 4)

All elements of the summative assessments must be passed in order to successfully complete the module.

Formative assessment will be provided to all students by means of feedback during the taught element of the module, completion of a formatively assessed communication role play, as well as individual tutorial support. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake an MCQ paper and receive formative feedback following this.

During their supervised clinical practice students will have a mentor, who they must meet with regularly to discuss progress, concerns, learning opportunities and areas for further development.

90 hours direct supervised clinical practice with nominated mentor, which equates to 7.5 hours per week for 12 weeks

Special Admissions Requirements
Applicants must be a registered nurse, midwife or sick children's nurse and have access to a suitably qualified clinical mentor.
