Module Learning Strategies
The learning strategy for this module requires students to commit 150 learning hours (including assessment). This will include 24 hours of class support and 126 hours of independent and self directed study.
The class sessions will include formal lectures, case study analysis and group discussions based on student experiences in the subject area. Students will be encouraged to integrate their work based experiences with new knowledge and skills developed in the classroom as the module progresses.
Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to increase awareness that hair / product science has and will continue to have on the daily practices within the salon environment, due to the high usage of chemicals now demanded from market trends.
This module will examine :
- Difference between commercial or professional brands, looking at key ingredients used within each (shampoo & conditioners, finishing products, heat protectors, chemical lines.)
- Hair service changes within the twentieth century and its impact in the twenty first century (exploring the changes within technical services)
- Twenty first century trends and the impact on the hair structure
- Changing demographics, cultural mixes and its influences within the business.
- The importance of understanding hair damage & controlling chemical damage, ensuring the best approach is used for the salon service
- Research future trends and product development, paying attention to your vision for the future of your business, reflecting on product lines or future salon services
- Issues surrounding developing own brands or working with a professional brand manufacture
- The tangible business benefits that may be derived from a better understanding of hair and product science will be examined.
