Module Indicative Content
Indicative Content:
The purpose of the module is to explore and appreciate the relationship between tourism, events and the environment. The module begins by examining understandings of the environment and the importance of the environment to the tourism and events industry. The module then analyses the negative and positive environmental impacts emerging as a consequence of tourism and events related activities. This leads to evaluating environmental management techniques and practices, which can be utilised in order to reduce the negative effects of tourism and events operations upon natural resources. The module considers the importance of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in analysing the potential effects of tourism and events development upon the environment and critically reflects upon the drawbacks of EIAs). The module then moves on to study matters of sustainability and focuses upon the concept of sustainable development in the context of tourism and events. Issues of sustainability are discussed in view of environmental responsibility, environmental marketing and tourism / events planning. The module concludes by identifying the environmental challenges faced by tourism and events industries in the development, management and planning of future operations. The main focus of the module are natural environments, however discussion is not limited to this as social / cultural environments are also referred to. The overall impetus of the module is to establish how a sustainable and ethical relationship between tourism / events and the environment can be managed.

Topics covered in this module will be drawn from: definitions of the environment; positive and negative environmental impacts of tourism / events; managing environmental impacts; Environment Impact Assessments; sustainable development; sustainable tourism and events; environmental responsibility; environmental marketing, sustainable tourism and events planning; and, environmental challenges for tourism and events.
