INDICATIVE CONTENT
Key cultural terms and concepts. Exploration of cultural theorists and musicologists such as (but not exclusively):
Adorno, Benjamin, Marcuse, Hall, Whitely, O’Brien, Street, Garratt, Shuker, Frith, Leonard, Denora, Middleton, Hebdidge, Stokes, Chomsky, Scruton. Globalisation and its affects upon music, Nationalism, Subcultures, Social and Economic influences upon music genres, Ethnicity, gender and sexuality within music.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Cultural Analysis Essay – students will write an essay from a pre-defined set of questions which will encourage them to explore a specific area of music of their choice and utilise the cultural theories which have been discussed in order to interrogate, explain and contextualise how the creation of their chosen music has influenced and been influenced by society at large.
