An essay exploring the role of values and evidence, using a given practice senario related to the students chosen branch of study.

This essay will explore how evidence and values contribute to care provision in a particular situation or incident from practice given as an example to the student. assessing learning outcomes 1,2,3 and 4

Additional Assessment Details (including formative feedback / assessment):
Formative assessment will involve group discussion, seminar involvement and the use of tutorials to
clarify, explore and discuss the focus of the reflective issue used for the assignment


Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to introduce you to the complex interplay of evidence, values and associated communication methodology that contribute to high quality evidence based and values mediated interventions in practice.

In order to achieve this you will focus on the following:
An Introduction to nursing knowledge and the evidence base for nursing
The nature of evidence - what constitutes evidence and how do we decide upon this
Perspectives on the value of different types of evidence
Nursing as science, art or practice
An introduction to the concept of evidence based practice including how values, evidence and resources shape care provision
The concept of reflection and its role in the development of nursing knowledge

An introduction to values based nursing and how this links with ways in which we communicate
Human values and beliefs and how they affect behaviour, care provision and the interpretation of the evidence base
Moral, ethical and spiritual issues in nursing care
Respect and dignity as core concepts for nursing practice
Rights and responsibilities
The need to respect diversity - anti discriminatory practice
Introduction to the concept of Social Role Valorisation

You will engage in the theory and practice of effective communication and consider how these skills are supported by the nursing values base.
