Module Additional Assessment Details
Oral presentation (100% Learning Outcomes 1-4) 15 minutes. Students will choose any area of indicative content and deliver a 15 minute presentation, supported with audio visual aids, to a group of their peers, which demonstrates their learning around theories and concepts explored within the module.

Additional Assessment Details (including formative feedback / assessment:
Students will be encouraged to use audio visual aids to enhance their oral presentation.

Formative feedback with involve group tutorials centred on the development of a plan for their presentation. Formative peer feedback will also be provided following presentations.

Theories and concepts concerning the process of effective communication and potential barriers
Assertiveness - what it is and what it is not as part of the communication process.
Active listening Faulty thinking patterns
Cognitive skills Loss and bereavement
Basic counselling skills including the nature and purpose of counselling.
The nature of anxiety as a barrier to effective communication and principles of anxiety and stress management.
Recognition, prevention and management of anger and aggression.

Communication skills are an essential part of effective healthcare practice. students from a range of health care backgrounds can explore ways to improve their own communciation in practice by exploring key themes relating to theory and how this can be bridged in to the practice environment.Included in this module is exploration of comunciation methods to help with assertiveness , active listening , loss and bereavement (breaking bad news);The nature of anxiety as a barrier to effective communication and principles of anxiety and stress management;Recognition, prevention and management of anger and aggression.
