Module Indicative Content
Grief theories. Self awareness, particularly in relation to perspectives of death grief and cultural diversity. Develop an understanding of the use of contracts within the bereavement support relationship. Undertake role play and practical exercises to develop listening skills, self awareness and support. Working with strong feelings. Development of reflective work, support and supervision. Procedures for safe ethical practice. How grief occurs within a family culture and society context and how this can impact on individuals
Module Learning Strategies
Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (36 hours)
A variety of training methods will be utilised including:
12 hours experiential learning reflective practice
12 hours case studies
4 hours interactive lectures
4 hours group work
4 hours directed reading
Guided Independent Study: (114 hours)
50 hours reading, research and Blackboard activity
20 hours preparation for group work and tutorials
22 hours preparation for summative presentation
22 hours preparation for summative written assessment
Module Additional Assessment Details
A 2,500 reflective essay demonstrating analysis of personal learning of the bereavement support worker. This will be based upon a reflective diary completed during the course (addressing all LO's)
Formative:
Students will be required to keep a reflective journal and to incorporate into this feedback which is offered throughout the role play / triad work, both from course tutors and their colleagues enabling them to build a journal of evidence reflecting upon their approach and intension to support people. Tutors will observe communication skills and Interactions throughout the course giving both verbal feedback and written notes
This must be undertaken before submitting the reflective assignment and completing the course.
Module Special Admissions Requirements
This course is not suitable for people who have experienced a recent close bereavement. Contact the module teaching team to discuss suitability of the course in these circumstances.
