This module will provide Health Care Assistants/Trainee Assistant Practitioners with the opportunity to demonstrate development of a range of work-based competencies that are linked to the Apprenticeship Standards for Assistant Practitioners (2016) and National Occupation Standards for Health and Social Care. The aim of the module is to enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of holistic care and how this applies to their role and specific clinical areas of practice. This will include
Exploration of HCA/AP role, boundaries and duty of care
Principles and philosophy of health and social care
Competency development
Health Promotion and health education
Provision and promotion of person centred care
Maintaining safe practice to include safeguarding adults and children
Legal and ethical issues relating to clinical practice to include:
Equality, diversity and inclusion
Data protection
Human rights
Confidentiality
Record keeping
Reflective Practice
Introduction to evidence based practice
Personal and professional development
Assessment Details
Summative Assessment
Porfolio of Evidence demonstrating knowledge and skill development as stipulated for role in core and job specific competencies (pass/fail). (Meets LO 1, 3, 5)
Portfolio of evidence should include:
Evidence of meeting all core and job specific theory and skills areas, reflecting the requirements of the Apprenticeship Standard for Assistant Practitioners (2016) and the National Occupation Standard. This will include a competency framework document demonstrating achievement at participation level for all competencies, using Steinaker and Bells framework. This must be verified by clinical mentor.
A written assignment (weighted at 50%) (Meets LO’s, 2, 3, 4& 5)
A 1500 word reflective assignment assignment relating to one of the identified competencies. This will enable you to reflect upon your role, development and learning as a HCA/Assistant Practitioner. This should include reference to relevant legislation and guidelines that underpins safe and effective practice. It should also demonstrate the application of your knowledge and skills within clinical practice.
An Action plan (weighted at 50%) Meets LO 4
An 1000 word action plan that will relate to personal and professional development needs in preparation for the Assistant Practitioner role
All elements of assessment must be passed to successfully complete the module

300 hours to be negotiated between the student and clinical mentor using WORLD model (Channell, 2002) in order to achieve competences.
