Assessment of clinical practice (LO 1) pass/refer/fail

All clinical competencies required by the professional governing body and listed in the practice assessment document must be achieved.

Feedback from practice supervisor/s and practice assessor.
Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to assess the individual’s performance in the practice setting against the professional standards expected and detailed in the practice assessment document. The content below is indicative of that which will be required to be addressed in the practice setting in order to complete this module

Application of NMC Code, standards and advice including The Code: Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics, and Guidance for Students of Nursing and Midwifery. This will include professional behaviour, public protection and professional self-regulation; use of reflection and clinical supervision

Application of relevant legislation and ethical principles to the nursing of children

Demonstration of a knowledge of children's rights, advocacy and gaining consent applied to the practice setting

Demonstrate partnership working with the child and family and other agencies, to include family centred care, negotiation of care and empowerment

Use of appropriate communication skills in order to develop therapeutic relationships with the child and family, communicate with colleagues and the wider inter-professional team

Use of a range of communication methods in the practice setting including play and distraction, communication tools, communication with sensory and cognitively impaired children and when people are anxious, distressed or in pain

A knowledge of normal child development - physical, cognitive and moral and how this applies in practice

A knowledge of the effects of hospitalisation on the child and family

Maintaining accurate practice records taking into account confidentiality and storage to include Data Protection Act

Information governance in the clinical setting

Practical demonstration of child centred frameworks for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care in the clinical setting

Insight into the process of care planning and documentation in the clinical setting

Demonstrate insight into contemporary guidance to include local and national policy, NICE guidelines and national benchmarks and how these apply in practice

Module Web Descriptor
This module is your first introduction to children’s nursing practice in the clinical setting. The practice competencies you need to achieve will focus around the themes of: professional, legal and ethical values of the children’s nurse when delivering care, communication and interpersonal skills, and organisation, care delivery and decision making within the children’s nursing practice setting
Module Learning Strategies
The application of evidence based nursing knowledge, skills and professional, ethical and legal principles into the practice setting when providing care to children.

Completion of hours in practice with direct and indirect supervision by practice supervisor
