Assessment of clinical practice (LO 1) pass/refer/fail

All clinical competencies required by the professional governing body and listed in the practice assessment document must be achieved.
Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to assess the individual’s performance in the practice setting against the professional standards expected and detailed in the practice assessment document. The content below is indicative of that which will be required to be addressed in the practice setting in order to complete this module.

Application of NMC Code, standards and advice including The Code: Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics, and Guidance for Students of Nursing and Midwifery. This will include professional behaviour, public protection and professional self-regulation; use of reflection and clinical supervision.

Demonstrate an appreciation of nursing roles, models and contexts - recognition of the needs of all those who require care, including babies, children and young people, pregnant and postnatal women, people with mental health problems, people with physical disabilities, people with learning disabilities, older people, and people with long term problems such as cognitive impairment - EU Directives.

Demonstrate knowledge regarding frameworks of care, and approaches to providing nursing care e.g. nursing process and nursing models, benchmarks and standards, essential skills clusters, National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines.

Practical knowledge of protection and safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children - legal frameworks and local policies.

Demonstration of the principles of consent and confidentiality- including children, vulnerable adults and those who lack capacity.

Application of nursing, law and ethics to adult nursing.

Ability to participate in care delivery within a variety of health and social care settings and the home and in differing contexts of adult nursing care, surgery, medical, recovery.

Demonstrate partnership working with service users, carers, families, groups, communities and organisations.

Demonstration of a range of communication skills, understanding the importance and significance of communication in adult healthcare.

Demonstrate the ability to recognise and respond to the range of factors that affect communication e.g. pain, distress, adult health problems, age, cognitive impairment.

Maintaining accurate records, confidentiality and storage to include Data Protection Act.

Demonstrate insight into relevant health policy development and its influence on adult health practice.

Demonstrate person centred care that explores values based approaches, recovery and social inclusion, challenges inequalities, stigma and discrimination.

Demonstrate insight into frameworks of care, and approaches to providing nursing care e.g. benchmarks and standards, essential skills clusters, National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines.

Demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other health and social care professionals and working with them collaboratively.

This module is your first introduction to adult nursing practice in the clinical setting. The practice competencies you need to achieve will focus around the themes of: professional, legal and ethical values of the adult nurse when delivering care, communication and interpersonal skills, and organisation, care delivery and decision making within the adult nursing practice setting.
