Assessment of clinical practice (LO 1) pass/refer/fail
All clinical competencies required by the professional governing body and listed in the practice assessment document must be achieved.
Formative Assessment:
Feedback from practice supervisor/s and practice assessor.
Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to assess the individual’s performance in the practice setting against the professional standards expected and detailed in the practice assessment document. The content below is indicative of that which will be required to be addressed in the practice setting in order to complete this module.
Application of NMC Code, standards and advice including The Code: Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics, and Guidance for Students of Nursing and Midwifery. This will include professional behaviour, public protection and professional self-regulation; use of reflection and clinical supervision
Practical knowledge of protection and safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children - legal frameworks and local policies
Demonstration of the principles of consent and confidentiality- including children, vulnerable adults and those who lack capacity
Application of nursing, law and ethics to mental health nursing
The fundamentals of applicable legislation including the Mental Health Act 1983, the Children Act 1989 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005
An introduction to risk assessment and management
An appreciation of how to recognise and respond in emergency situations, including acute mental distress, self-harm, attempted suicide, aggression and violence
Demonstration of a range of communication skills, understanding the importance and significance of communication in mental healthcare
Demonstrate the ability to recognise and respond to the range of factors that affect communication e.g. pain, distress, mental health problems, age, cognitive impairment
Maintaining accurate records, confidentiality and storage to include Data Protection Act
Demonstrate insight into relevant health policy development and its influence on mental health practice
Demonstrate person centred care that explores values based approaches, recovery and social inclusion, challenges inequalities, stigma and discrimination
Demonstrate insight into frameworks of care, and approaches to providing nursing care e.g. benchmarks and standards, essential skills clusters, National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines
Demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other health and social care professionals and working with them collaboratively
Web Descriptor
This module is your first introduction to mental health nursing practice in the clinical setting. The practice competencies you need to achieve will focus around the themes of: professional, legal and ethical values of the mental health nurse when delivering care, communication and interpersonal skills, and organisation, care delivery and decision making within the mental health nursing practice setting.
Learning Strategies
The application of evidence based nursing knowledge, skills and professional, ethical and legal principles into the practice setting when providing care to clients.
Completion of hours in practice with direct and indirect supervision by practice supervisor
