Theoretical models to guide reflective thoughts and writing
An introduction to looking at the evidence base for practice

Mandatory Skills – Moving and Handling
Basic Life Support (Adult, Child, Infant and AED use)
Infection prevention and control (Chain of infection, Basics of microbiology, use of PPE, hand
decontamination, universal precautions).
Medicines management and administration (Legal and Professional aspects)

Numeracy in nursing
Clinical Assessment – vital signs monitoring and use of NEWS
Emergency First Aid 1
Mental health First Aid 1
Risk assessment tools in practice – Falls risk, oral assessment tools, mobility, bed rails assessments
Nutrition and hydration
Skin assessment and hygiene needs
Infection prevention, control and antimicrobial stewardship
Placement preparation to include looking after yourself

Skills will be taught using simulation and in skills labs settings. Audio-visual presentations will also be used to enhance/embed these.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
In addition to the 200 hours theoretical learning, students are required to complete the practical component (240hrs) in line with regulatory body requirements.

During this module, members of our service user and carer group will be involved in the simulated learning environment activities.

WEB DESCRIPTOR
This module aims to build your knowledge, experience and skills around Mental Health nursing care with a specific focus upon practical skills and reflective practice. The module links practice learning period 1. You will undertake study related to the underpinning theory around common practical skills related to Mental Health nursing care alongside having the opportunity to develop those practical skills by undertaking simulated practice within the University Skills and Simulation Labs. You will begin to develop an understanding of evidence-based practice and practical skills that are required to fulfil the role of the Mental Health nurse.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
1. Written reflection – this will require reflection upon a clinical scenario. This scenario should relate to an experience or care episode identified from placement period one. If placement learning cannot be carried out a scenario will be provided for you to reflect upon. The themes of this reflection should relate to platform 4, providing and evaluating care. Learners will use a reflective model to structure their work (LO 1 and LO 2).
