Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
Theory and practice:
Numeracy in nursing / drug calculations
Medicines management – Inhaled/Controlled Drugs/SC fluids/Nebulisers/Oxygen therapy (alternative methods of
delivery). PGDs and PSDs.
Assessment and monitoring of the deteriorating patient to include sepsis.
Emergency First Aid
Mental health First Aid
Nutrition and Hydration to include breast-feeding, fluid balance monitoring, height/weight/BMI
Elimination and sampling to include male and female catheterisation, blood glucose, urine analysis, swabbing, sputum and
stool sampling.
Responding appropriately to uncontrolled symptoms to include pain assessment and management.
Risk assessment tools in practice - continence assessment, malnutrition screening, pain assessment tools, Bristol stool
chart.
Patient admission and initial assessment
Aseptic non-touch technique
Reflective practice
Placement preparation to include looking after yourself/resilience
Infection prevention, control and antimicrobial stewardship
Skills will be taught using simulation and in skills labs settings. Audio-visual presentations will also be used to enhance/embed these.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
In addition to the 200 hours theoretical learning, students are required to complete the practical component (240hrs) in line with regulatory body requirements.

WED DESCRIPTOR
This module aims to build your knowledge, experience and skills around Mental Health nursing care with a specific focus upon practical skills and reflective practice. The module links to your second practice learning period. You will undertake study related to the underpinning theory around common practical skills related to Mental Health nursing care alongside having the opportunity to develop those practical skills by undertaking simulated practice within the University Skills and Simulation Labs. You will begin to develop an understanding of evidence-based practice and practical skills that are required to fulfil the role of the Mental Health nurse.
