Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to enable you to develop practice which supports the principles considered in year one. You will be able to underpin your practice with ethical and legal principles ensuring your practice supports and values children and young people and their families.

- Safeguarding: assessing the needs of specific child client groups, including those with long term and/or complex care needs, mental health and learning needs, and those with life limiting conditions and vulnerable adults
- Raising concerns appropriately, professional, legal and ethical issues.
- Children's rights and advocacy
- Issues of choice, confidentiality and consent
- Working in partnership with the child and family and other agencies, to include family centred care, negotiation of care, empowerment and dignity.
- The development of communication skills to include the dynamics of inter-professional working, information sharing, and confidentiality.
- The development and maintenance of therapeutic relationships through safe and effective communication.
- Assisting children effectively with health choices.
- An awareness of the potential impact of own beliefs and values.
- The diverse health needs of children in modern society to include young carers, intergenerational care, family dynamics and the impact of poverty and social deprivation on child well-being.
- The role of the children's nurse in secondary settings and the importance of collaborative working.
- Assessing and implementing risk assessment in child care settings.

- Care delivery within a variety of children's health and social care settings and in the home, exploring values, choice, dignity, culture, diversity, spirituality, gender, sexuality, and non-discriminatory practice
- The impact of chronic and life limiting illness within families

- Developing skills to manage conflict and challenge within children's nursing practice
- Self-management strategies- time management, managing stress and resources effectively
- Power relationships within teams (professional power, gender, barriers to effective team working)
Module Additional Assessment Details
Profile exploring issues related to safeguarding, inter-professional working and risk assessment, with viva voce examination (20 minutes) 100% (all LOs)

Formative Assessment:
A group presentation of 10-15 minutes - duration based on student's experiences on team working during the module and related to the module learning outcomes. The presentation will be peer and self-assessed

Welcome to the module 'Valuing and Protecting Children'. This is a Level 5, 30 credit module. This is a very exciting module which has a number of lectures delivered by 'experts' within the filed of safeguarding and protecting children
