Module Additional Assessment Details
1) Written Assessment 3, 000 words 50% (assessing LO's 2, 4, 5, and 6)
A written reflective account of personal and professional development related to an area of mental health practice. The account will include detail of how you have developed as a mental health practitioner over the duration of your course, identifying areas for further development and the steps that you will undertake to achieve this.
2) A SEEN EXAM length 1 HOURS weighted at 50%. (assessing LO's 2 and 3)
An examination that contains a seen scenario related to a mental health clinical situation. The examination will explore the physiology and patho-physiology of mental distress and include assessment, care planning, therapeutic interventions and psycho-education.
3) Practice Assessment Pass/Refer/fail (assessing LO 1)
Submission of approved clinical assessment documentation

Formative feedback will include lecturer and tutor feedback through workshops and group work and in personal and group tutorials.
Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of key nursing concepts and to apply this to the holistic needs of those that utilise mental health services, including family and carers. The Module is underpinned by examining bio-psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs and delivering care that maintains dignity, is culturally competent and free from discrimination, harassment and exploitation.
The indicative content is based upon recommendations from the NMC Essential Skills Clusters (NMC, 2007); The CNO Review of Mental Health Nursing (DH, 2006) and the 10 Essential Shared Capabilities (DH, 2004) and National Occupational Standards (2007).
Values and Recovery
Exploring self-awareness and understanding how the use of self can be used effectively in providing care that is warm, sensitive and compassionate. To incorporate Recovery Approaches into therapeutic nursing interventions,
Risk Management Strategies
Promotion of safety and positive risk taking. Exploring the tension between disclosure and maintenance of professional boundaries, including protecting vulnerable people. Other strategies include: Moving and handling; Basic Life support; Personal protection training; Safe storage and safe administration of medication; Standard Infection Control procedures delivered in skills based sessions within the skills laboratories
Physical Health Needs
Examining the patho-physiology of mental health and illness, identifying the impact of mental health upon physical health and vice versa. Medication management - Incorporating an understanding of pharmacology, including interactions, side-effects and physical health monitoring.
Developing nursing practice therapeutic skills
Developing and maintaining positive therapeutic relationships and supporting those experiencing difficult and challenging circumstances. Developing assessment and care planning skills and working in partnership with the service user and significant others.
