CLINICAL PRACTICE assessment weighted at 0% pass/refer/fail (addressing LOs 2, 4 and 5)
1.5 HOUR EXAM weighted at 100% (addressing LO's 1, 3 and 4)
All elements of the assessment must be passed
Formative Assessment:
Group discussions, mock exam, group and individual tutorial support and from mentors in clinical practice
Indicative Content
The aim of the module is to apply the relevant nursing knowledge and skills necessary to enable the student to progress and work in a safe and increasingly confident way in mental health nursing practice across the lifespan.
- Nursing practice according to The Code: Standard of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives (NMC 2008), and within other recognised ethical and legal frameworks.
- Evidence-based practice, and developing practice which adheres to national and local strategies related to the care of individuals who are experiencing mental health difficulties and their families/carers
- Safe, compassionate, person-centred, evidence based nursing care that respects and maintains dignity and human rights.
- Holistic, non-judgmental, caring and sensitive manner that recognises and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity.
- Understanding behaviour and using appropriate strategies to provide support and to resolve conflict.
- Maintaining accurate, clear and complete records as part of nursing practice.
- Communication and interpersonal skills in a professional manner that shows respect, warmth and compassion.

- Safety and positive risk taking. Exploring the tension between disclosure and maintenance of professional boundaries
- Assessment and planning of care delivered to individuals with varying health needs including knowledge of pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, pathology, psychology and sociology. To include effective risk assessment and management
- Safeguarding and protecting vulnerable people including recognition of abuse and neglect and the referral process.
- Recognition, assessment and care of individuals with sudden deterioration of conditions
- Safe and skilful nursing care interventions and procedures relevant to mental health nursing practice to include specialist interventions concerning nutrition, observation/assessment of individuals considered at risk (to themselves or others), emergency psychiatric care, anaphylaxis, signs of infection, principles of infection prevention and control and principles of aseptic technique.
- Annual mandatory updates on Basic Life Support, Moving and Handling and Medicines Management.
- Medicines management
- Practice in a manner which demonstrates self-awareness and recognition of how personal values and beliefs may influence practice, team working and leadership, and maintain own personal and professional development by actively engaging in clinical supervision and reflection
- Developing peers and others
- Communication skills to promote awareness of mental health issues within multi professional teams and external agencies, providing advice and support, when required, to ensure best practice in mental health care
