Module Indicative Content
The module provides Trainee Assistant Practitioners with the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health and illness and apply this to the holistic needs of those in contact with mental health services. The module will consist of both taught sessions and practice based learning demonstrated through the attainment of work based competencies. The indicative content is based upon the recommendations/standards of the 10 Essential Shared Capabilities (Department of Health, 2004) and National Occupational Standards for mental health (2007).

Module Additional Assessment Details
An ASSIGMT length 2500 WORDS weighted at 50%. Portfolio weighted at 50%. PRACTICE assessment weighted at 0%.
1) Practice Assessment Pass/Refer/fail (contributes to meeting LO's 1, 2 and 4)
2) Portfolio 50% (contributes to meeting LO's 1, 2, 3 ,6 and 7 )
The portfolio will demonstrate the achievement of the learning outcomes by using the 10 Essential Shared Capabilities to structure the portfolio in evidencing professional development.
3) Written Assessment 2, 500 words 50% (contributes to meeting LO's 4,5,6 and 7)
A 2000 word reflection of your personal and professional development related to an area of practice. The account will include detail of how you have developed as an assistant practitioner (mental health) over the duration of your course and a 500 word Action Plan, identifying areas for continuing professional development.
Submission of approved clinical assessment documentation
All assessments have to be passed in order to successfully complete the course.
n.b.Formative feedback will include lecturer, clinical mentor and peer feedback through group work, progress reviews and in personal and group tutorials.
Module Special Admissions Requirements
Successful completion of Year One of the Foundation Degree for Mental Health.
To be supported by employer to undertake the Trainee Assistant Practitioner role/award

The Module provides Trainee Assistant Practitioners with the opportunity to evidence their personal and professional development in enhancing the experience of mental health service users receiving care/interventions in a mental health setting.
Contact Hours: (60)
48 hours Interactive lecturers
6 hours Group work and discussion
6 hours Individual Tutorials
Independent Study Hours: (540)
300 hours to be negotiated between the student and clinical practice mentor, using the WORLD Model (Channell 2002) in order to achieve competencies.
240 hours preparation for assessment
ASSESSMENT DETAILS
1) Practice Assessment (Pass/Refer/fail) contributing to meeting LO's 1, 2 and 4
2) A case presentation highlighting how the role of Assistant Practitioner had contributed to the care provided to an individual and/or family member(s) (Not exceeding 20 minutes) LOs 2, 3, 4 & 5 (80%)
3) A 500 word action plan identifying areas for continuing professional development. Contributing to meeting LOs 6 & 7 (20%)

This module forms part of the training programme for Trainee Assistant Practitioners (TAPs) and is designed to ensure that you gain the necessary key skills, knowledge, and understanding required to undertake the role of Assistant Practitioner within your specific work area. This module will enable you to develop and enhance your practice through taught sessions and working through the attainment of work based competencies. The module therefore includes a blend of university work and work based learning to maximise learning opportunities.
