Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to enable students to integrate their learning and experience of nursing care, developing their ability to manage, systematically analyse and critically evaluate service user centred nursing care within the context of the wider nursing and multi disciplinary team. Content of the module includes:

Mental health problems will be explored in a holistic way (including physical health care) utilising the NMC Skills Clusters as a framework for exploring these conditions (assessment, implementation and care delivery, evaluation, infection control, nutrition and medication management) and utilising relevant local and national standards.
Managing emergencies (links with Managing Professional Nursing Practice issues such as leadership, prioritising and time management), and includes suicide attempts, anaphylaxis, challenging behaviour and management of aggression and violence
Making sense of trauma and loss (including spirituality). Explores the longer-term mental health implications of trauma and loss and links to the acute crises discussed above.
Therapeutic responses to abuse (links with Managing Professional Nursing Practice in relation to protection of vulnerable adults and children).
Culturally competent care in mental health (links with Managing Professional Nursing Practice)
Preparing clients, their carers and members of the multidisciplinary team for transition / transfer between services pathways, process and practice. Team working, networking and utilising services.
Practical responses to mental health problems across the lifespan which will build upon the conditions examined in year two and examine a range of problems including personality disorder, eating distress , self harm. Substance misuse.
Management of individuals with specific needs including learning disabilities, and people on the Autistic spectrum.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Five areas model. Explores the use of CBT for different problems, age groups, and cognitive abilities.
Biological supporting theory for all conditions will be integrated into the sessions.

Module Additional Assessment Details
An Assignment length 5,000 WORDS weighted at 100%. (LO 2- 8)

A CLINICAL PRACTICE weighted at 0%. (LO 1) pass/refer/fail

5,000 word assignment demonstrating a review of care planning (assessment, planning & evaluation) for a chosen service user, demonstrating achievement of Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 (100%)

Achievement of NMC practice standards and skills (Learning Outcome 1)
All elements must be passed.

Formative assessment will include: Role plays and quiz

All students must adhere to the Faculty of Health Policy on Confidentiality and Ethical Issues in Academic Practice and Learning.
