An ASSIGNMENT length 3,000 WORDS weighted at 50%. (LO 4, 5 and 6)
Analysis of a significant event relating to children's nursing practice which demonstrates achievement
of learning outcomes 4,5, and 6
A CLINICAL PRACTICE assessment weighted at 0%. (LO 1 and 3) pass/refer/fail
All elements must be passed
Formative assessment will include: group discussion, seminar involvement, group and individual tutorials, feedback to student from mentors in clinical practice, simulation/skills practice in skills laboratories

Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to help you learn and apply knowledge and understanding of patho-physiology, therapeutics, pharmacology, nursing concepts to supervised assessment, delivery and evaluation of children's nursing care in hospital, at home or other alternative healthcare settings. You will also become engaged in the analysis of children's nursing problems and solutions, service user safety, risk and risk assessment. The module will also provide opportunity for you to develop and apply skills to the assessment and holistic delivery of nursing care of children within placement settings. In order to achieve this aim the content of the module includes:
Mandatory Core and branch specific skills (with reference to NMC essential skills clusters) for details, see handbook
Safeguarding children and children's rights- recognition of children at risk of or experiencing abuse and initial response
Risk assessment including recognition of infection risk and infection control in children
Assessment and holistic age appropriate care of children with altered health needs linked to the systems of life. This will include pathophysiology, therapeutics, pharmacology, recognition of the sick child, children with enduring health needs, children with life limiting conditions and children in pain
Care of the sick and low birth weight infant
Effects of altered health status on the child and family
Child and adolescent mental health, for example - issues relating to self harm, suicide and substance abuse
Factors enhancing/inhibiting child development
Organisation of the nursing care of children
Communicating with the child and family ' including play'
Meeting the nutritional needs of children with altered health status
Meeting the cultural and spiritual needs of children with altered health status
National and locally driven health and social care policies, strategies and guidelines relating to child health
