An assignment length of 2500 words weighted at 100%. (LO’s 1, 2 and 3)
Critical appraisal of a research article related to a clinical skill
Numeracy Exam, weighted at 0% (Pass or Fail) (LO 4)
A 60 minute examination. 70% pass mark is required to pass.
Both elements of assessment must be passed
Formative assessment:
Feedback through group discussions, simulation / skills practice in clinical skills laboratories, group and tutorial support.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
The aim of the module is to build upon existing knowledge and skills in order to enable the student to deliver safe and effective nursing practice through the critical appraisal of current evidence throughout the lifespan.
Appraising evidence and applying relevant theory and research findings to practice.
Using best available evidence to support person-centred anti-discriminatory nursing practice.
Assessment skills to support nursing practice across the age continuum.
Recognising and interpreting signs of normal and deteriorating mental and physical health in order to respond appropriately to changes in the patients’ health status.
Correct use, limitations and hazards of common nursing interventions.
Developing safe, knowledgeable and skilful nursing care interventions in a range of transferable clinical skills including annual mandatory training requirements within legal and ethical frameworks.
Theoretical and practice based learning linking to the requirements of the EU directives including maternity care.
Reviewing evidence based practice and National and local strategies related to nursing practice skills.
Promoting safe, compassionate, person-centred, evidence-based nursing that respects and maintains dignity and human rights.
Providing nursing practice in a holistic, non-judgemental, caring and culturally sensitive manner that recognises and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity.
Accurate assessment, using diagnostic and decision-making skills as a means of developing safe and effective immediate care to people of all ages.
Specific evidence-based nursing practice skills that will be covered include:
-male and female urinary catheterisation and catheter care
-nutrition, assessment and nursing interventions including enteral feeding
-wound care and tissue viability to include signs of infection; principles of infection prevention and control; principles of aseptic technique; stages of wound healing; care of and removal of drains
- medicine management to include legal frameworks including prescribing, supply and storage; alternative routes for administering medicines; calculation of frequency encountered medicines; side effects and adverse reactions; awareness of self-administration of medicines and Patient Group Direction
- annual mandatory update on Basic Life Support
- awareness of In-Hospital Life Support
- safe Moving and Handling
- the deteriorating patient
- neurological observations
- understanding human behaviour
