Assignment of 1500 words which critically appraises a research article related to a clinical skill (weighted at 100%) that demonstrates achievement of learning outcomes 1, 2 and 4
An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) of 20 minutes duration (weighted at 0% Pass/Refer) assessing aseptic technique and numeracy (addressing learning outcome 3)
All elements must be passed to complete the module.

Indicative Content
The aim of the module is to build upon existing knowledge and skills to enable the Trainee Nursing Associate to deliver safe and effective care through the critical appraisal of the current evidence base and through gaining competence in a range of practical skills.
The content will include
Appraising evidence and applying relevant theory and research findings to practice
Using best available evidence to support person-centred anti-discriminatory nursing practice
Assessment skills to support nursing across the life span
Recognising and interpreting signs of normal and deteriorating mental and physical health, and respond appropriately to changes in the patient’s health status
Correct use, limitations and hazards of common nursing interventions
Theoretical and practice-based learning linking to the requirements of the apprenticeship standard including maternity care
Reviewing evidence-based practice and national and local strategies related to nursing practice skills
Promoting safe, compassionate, person-centred, evidence-based care that respects and maintains dignity and human rights.
Providing care in a holistic, non-judgemental, caring and culturally sensitive manner that recognises and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity.
Accurate assessment, using diagnostic and decision-making skills as a means of developing safe and effective immediate care to people of all ages.
Specific evidence-based nursing practice skills that will be covered include:
- male and female urinary catheterisation and catheter care
- nutrition, assessment and nursing interventions including enteral feeding.
- wound care and tissue viability to include signs of infection; principles of infection prevention and control; principles of aseptic technique; stages of wound healing; care of and removal of drains, care of patients with burns and the management of haemorrhage.
- medicines management to include legal frameworks including, supply and storage; alternative routes for administering medicines; calculation of frequently encountered medicines; side effects and adverse reactions; awareness of self-administration of medicines and Patient Group/Specific Directions.

- venepuncture, cannulation, blood sampling and routine ECG recording
- choking, neck injury, fitting, seizures and anaphylaxis
