Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
Patient assessment, prioritising and planning care needs.
Partnership working for holistic care
Assessment of urinary and bowel incontinence/use of continence products/self-catheterisation/manual evacuation
Nutritional assessment and supporting nutrition – nasogastric insertion and management; gastrostomy management,
parenteral nutritional support.
Medicines management including intravenous and intraosseous administration
Drug calculations/numeracy in nursing
Venepuncture and cannulation
Awareness and management of vascular access devices
Developing critical reflective practice
Practice assessment
Placement preparation to include looking after yourself/resilience
Infection prevention, control and antimicrobial stewardship
Skills will be taught using simulation and in skills labs settings. Audio-visual presentations will also be used to enhance/embed these.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
In addition to the 200 hours theoretical learning, students are required to complete the practical component (240hrs) in line with regulatory body requirements.

WEB DESCRIPTOR
This module aims to build your knowledge, experience and skills around Mental Health nursing care with a specific focus upon practical skills and reflective practice. The module links to practice learning period 5. You will undertake study related to the underpinning theory around common practical skills related to Mental Health nursing care alongside having the opportunity to develop those practical skills by undertaking simulated practice within the University Skills and Simulation Labs. You will continue to develop an understanding of evidence-based practice and practical skills that are required to fulfil the role of the Mental Health nurse.

Written reflection – this will require reflection upon a clinical scenario. This scenario can be hypothetical or chosen from your placement experience and will be linked to platform 3, assessing needs and planning care. You must use a reflective model to structure your work (LO 1, LO 2 and LO 3)
