Mandatory Skills – Moving and Handling
Basic Life Support (Adult, Child, Infant and AED use) and awareness of in-hospital life support
Infection prevention and control (Chain of infection/Standard Precautions/Isolation and barrier
Nursing/Antimicrobial stewardship).
Medicines management
Tissue viability, wound assessment and ANTT (simple and complex wounds), common skin conditions.
Drug calculations and numeracy
Nutritional assessment and supporting nutrition – nasogastric insertion and management; gastrostomy management, parenteral nutritional support.
Developing critical reflective practice
Placement preparation
Practice assessment
Looking after yourself in placement to include resilience
Mental health awareness – signs of self-harm; suicidal ideation.
Conflict management and communication skills and approaches for providing therapeutic interventions.
Monitoring effectiveness and improving quality of care
Skills will be taught using simulation and in skills labs settings. Audio-visual presentations will also be used to enhance/embed these.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
In addition to the 200 hours theoretical learning, students are required to complete the practical component (240hrs) in line with regulatory body requirements.

WEB DESCRIPTOR
This module aims to build your knowledge, experience and skills around children’s nursing care with a specific focus upon practical skills and reflective practice. The module links to practice learning period 4. You will undertake study related to the underpinning theory around common practical skills related to children’s nursing care alongside having the opportunity to develop those practical skills by undertaking simulated practice within the University Skills and Simulation Labs. You will continue to develop an understanding of evidence-based practice and practical skills that are required to fulfil the role of the children’s nurse.

Written reflection ¿ this will require reflection upon a clinical scenario. This scenario can be hypothetical or chosen from your placement experience and will be linked to platform 6, improving safety and quality of care. You must use a reflective model to structure your work (LO 1 & LO 2)
