Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is to build and further enhance the skills developed in previous modules It will enable you to progress your skills and lead the design, delivery and evaluation of care delivery in a variety of settings.
- Professional, legal and ethical standards related to complex children's health care needs
- Managing complex situations where vulnerability and safeguarding may be of concern
- Self awareness and recognition of own limitations and values in assessing and delivering nursing care to those experiencing complex health care needs
- Establishing and managing therapeutic relationships with children and their families
- Inter-professional communication
- Breaking bad news/giving difficult information to child and family
- Holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of age appropriate care of children with complex health needs considering individual dignity, spirituality and culture including pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, pathology, psychology and sociology.
- Effective nursing assessment of complex care needs utilising clinical assessment tools
- The deteriorating child - recognition and management
- Care of the dying child and their family
- Management of the child with multiple health care problems
- Medicine management in children's nursing - including complex calculations
- Risk assessment and management including the prevention and control of infection and medical devices
- Mandatory skills sessions
- Core and field specific skills
- Discharge co-ordination to include preparation for retrieval/transfer to other care providers
- Networking, team working and utilising services of other health care personnel/agencies to assist in meeting the bio-psycho social needs of children with acute and complex care needs
- Using the framework of clinical governance to maintain professional nursing standards in meeting complex and changing healthcare needs
- Utilisation of local and national policies and robust evidence based literature to inform clinical nursing practice and decision making.

This is a very exciting and innovative module aiming to build upon and enhance the skills that you have learnt within your training so far. There are many different aspects to this module and sessions are delivered in a variety of ways, including face to face lectures, student led learning, simulated learning and peer learning. We also have a number of specialist lecturers teaching specific sessions including the Police, Social Services and Forensics. The different lectures/learning environments include interprofessional education, care of the deteriorating child, exploration into unexplained paediatric deaths (forensics), and care of the child with multiple and complex needs.
