Module Indicative Content
- Recovery orientated and person centred interventions in the delivery of mental health nursing care
- Professional, legal, and ethical standards related to complex mental health care
- Managing complex situations where vulnerability and safeguarding may be of concern
- Self-awareness and recognition of own limitations in assessing and delivering nursing care to those experiencing complex healthcare needs
- liaising with the wider multi-disciplinary team and other agencies (including advocacy) as appropriate to ensure that individual needs are met
- Therapeutic engagement in complex healthcare and non-healthcare settings
- Models of interventions to support the development of communication and interpersonal skills in complex health care situation e.g. loss, end of life care, harm reduction strategies, positive risk taking
- Family and carer considerations, using a model for family interventions
- Models of therapeutic intervention
- Effective nursing assessment of complex care needs utilising clinical assessment tools
- Planning, implementing and evaluating care to address complex needs taking in to account age specific; cultural specific and family/carer considerations
- Meeting the nursing care needs of those experiencing complex health issues ¿ including co-morbidities, dual diagnosis; perinatal care; and learning disabilities, and effectively responding in a timely manner to changing health care needs
- Special considerations of environmental factors affecting mental health and wellbeing in complex situations e.g. military mental health, hostels, residential home care settings; forensic settings
- Addressing the physical health needs (in a mental health setting) of those experiencing long-term physical and mental health issues
- Utilisation of local and national policies and robust evidence based literature to inform clinical nursing practice and decision making
- Identification and recognition of appropriate multi-professional agencies/services to assist in meeting the bio-psycho social needs of individuals experiencing mental health issues
- Using the framework of clinical governance to maintain professional nursing standards in meeting complex healthcare needs
- To consider the role of supervising and delegating in relation to meeting the complex healthcare needs of individuals in contact with mental health services
- Undertaking clinical supervision through simulation of events in practice
- Placement preparation and evaluation

The module teaching is underpinned by the experience of people living with dementia. Taught theory is balanced with how to put this into practice, for instance you will learn what to say when someone in their 80s is looking for their parents or how to effectively maintain good fluid intake for people struggling to make sense of their surroundings.
