Module Indicative Content
This module will provide an opportunity for students to explore the theory that supports the practice of community mental health nursing in the light of current policy initiatives with reference to contemporary theories in order to further develop skills. Thereby enabling students to critically reflect on innovative practice and to influence new ways of working. The module will facilitate the awareness of local, national and international health policy in relation to the role of the community mental health nurse. The integration of theory and practice within this module will enable the student to understand and apply the principles of patient assessment and caseload management.
Content will include: assessment skills and approaches in identifying need/risk; user involvement and collaborative working; social inclusion and anti-discriminatory working; care co-ordination and care planning for individuals and groups; introduction to cognitive and behavioural therapeutic approaches; evaluation of practice; legal and ethical issues; assessment the management of clinical emergencies, inclusive of violent and challenging behaviours; critical incident analysis and reflective practice; health promotion in a mental health context; biological basis of mental health; identifying and addressing the needs of vulnerable groups.

Module Special Admissions Requirements
This module is only open to students undertaking the BSc. (Hons) Specialist Practice - Community Mental Health Nursing
All students undertaking this module must have access to a designated and registered practice mentor (Community Practice Teacher/Educator, Sign-off Mentor) in a practice placement area
This practice component is 50% of the award as per NMC Standards for Specialist Practice
