A reflective personal portfolio of evidence which demonstrates your evidence of learning achieved during the module, its application in the workplace and areas for future learning and development. (minimum 6000 words) LO's 1, 3 and 4 100% weighting

INDICATIVE CONTENT
Using the Practice Nurse Competency Framework (PNCF©) as a resource tool this module aims to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence of general practice nurses to demonstrate the core competencies deemed to be essential for all General Practice Nurses as well as selected level 1 competencies. The emphasis will be on the provision of a holistic, multi-professional approach to meeting the needs of a diverse patient group. Students will be empowered to assess and implement high quality care for patients, referring onwards when the care required is without the limits of their competence. Competence will be demonstrated through completion of a competency document assessed by a suitable qualified mentor within the students own general practice and development of a critically reflective portfolio.

An introduction to the following topics will be explored in relation to the role of the general practice nurse:
Accountability, anticoagulation, appraisal of others, asthma, audit, review and research, cancer
cardiovascular disease, cervical screening, chronic kidney disease (CKD),Clinical guidelines, protocols, directions, directives, communication with teams, consultation, contraception and sexual health, contracts, regulations, Care Quality Commission regulations and outcomes, Quality Outcomes Framework and service redesign, COPD, data protection, confidentiality, information governance, record keeping and the law, dementia, depression diabetes, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and therapeutic monitoring, ear care, end of life, palliative care and terminal illness, epilepsy equality and diversity, equipment and stock management, health and safety, health promotion (MECC), heart failure, hypertension, immunisations – adult and child, Infection control and cleanliness, leadership and management, learning disabilities, mental health, minor illness, minor injury, osteoporosis, pharmacology and medicines optimisation, reflective practice, safeguarding - adults and children ,smoking cessation, tissue viability and wound care, travel health and vaccination, treating people with dignity and respect, venepuncture.

The knowledge and skills acquired during the module are in line with and are underpinned by the RCGP framework, RCGP (2012) General Practice Nursing Competencies.”

SPECIAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
Registered Nurse
Employed in general practice setting or have access to a clinical placement in general practice for 1 year.
Access to a general practice nurse mentor who is registered on the NMC practice register and is employed with in practice setting and has been so for a minimum 2 years and who has also completed an approved mentor training program

Employability:
Career opportunities will be enhanced by further study i.e. opportunities such as completion of BSc Nursing or MSc Advanced Clinical Practice
