Group work, case scenarios, patient stories.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module will provide an opportunity for students to explore the theory that supports the practice of district nursing with particular emphasis on:
- The impact and influence of policy on practice
- Legal and ethical issues
- Self-awareness, reflection in and on practice, discourse analysis, critical incident analysis
- Nursing paradigm development and approaches to care
- Developments, philosophies and principles underpinning practice
- The patient and carer perspective in the health care dynamic

Students will be able to critically reflect on innovative practice and its influence in new ways of working. The integration of theory and practice within this module will enable the student to understand and apply the principles of patient assessment and caseload management
Content will include:
- Assessment skills and approaches to identifying patient and carer need
- Care co-ordination and care planning for individuals and groups
- Patient and carer involvement and empowerment - Identifying strategies to address the needs of these potentially vulnerable groups
- Therapeutic relationships; intervention strategies; counselling skills; health education, prevention and promotion; the public health agenda
- Leadership and change management in District Nursing
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (60 hours)
45 hours - Lectures
10 hours - Action Learning Sets
5 hours - Directed Study

Guided Independent Study: (240 hours)
180 hours - Independent learning activities
60 hours - Portfolio development

Clinical practice requirement - 50% of the Programme is in the practice setting outside of university contact hours to fulfil required practice component.

SPECIAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
To undertake this module students must be enrolled on the Specialist Practice - District Nursing Programme
Must have entry on an appropriate part of the professional register as a first level nurse
Must have completed a period of experience in professional practice of at least 12 months full time equivalent.
Must be currently engaged in practice.
Must have a written agreement from the sponsoring Trust for their practice placements/sponsorship
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Critically Analyse and Evaluate current District Nursing Practice and compare and contrast this to the contemporary evidence base (Analysis, Enquiry, Knowledge and Understanding)

2. Demonstrate the application of in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in order to be able to develop strategies and lead programmes of care within the sphere of District Nursing Practice(Application, Communication, Knowledge and Understanding)

3. Demonstrate higher level decision making and be able to integrate and apply appropriate strategies when approaching complex scenarios utilising specialist knowledge (Application, Problem Solving)

4. Demonstrate a critically reflexive approach to ones own, and others, practice, and synthesise innovative solutions to address the needs of service users, carers and communities (Learning, Problem Solving, Reflection)

5. To meet the NMC (2001) Standards of Specialist Practice Education (Health Award Specific 1)
