The student will critically evaluate care of a patient with COPD or Asthma in their clinical area in context with contemporary management, treatments, collaborative working and evidence based practice. (Addresses all LO's)

Formative assessment - Students will demonstrate inhaler technique and identify exclusion criteria for spirometry testing
INDICATIVE CONTENT
Physiology and pathophysiology of the respiratory system, diagnosis and management of COPD and Asthma, the application and interpretation of lung function tests, practical aspects of spirometry and inhaler technique, patient education, therapeutic management of acute exacerbations, collaborative working for optimal patient care, review of guidelines and political drivers influencing COPD and Asthma, review of evidence based nursing care, and research, monitoring and evaluation of care, patient perception of intervention. Exploring the differentiation between the aetiology of asthma and COPD and the impact on the patient.
