INDICATIVE CONTENT
Physiology and pathophysiology of the respiratory system; diagnosis and management of COPD and asthma; the application and interpretation of lung function tests; practical aspects of spirometry and inhaler technique; patient education; therapeutic management of acute exacerbations; collaborative working for optimal patient care; review of guidelines and political drivers influencing COPD and asthma; review of evidence based nursing care; monitoring and evaluation of care; patient perception of intervention. Exploring the differentiation between the aetiology of asthma and COPD and the impact on the patient.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
1. The written case study should evaluate the assessment and delivery of quality care for a patient with COPD or asthma focusing on collaborative working (Addresses all Learning 0utcomes)
2. Demonstrate inhaler technique and identify exclusion criteria for spirometry testing. (Addresses learning Outcome 4)

WEB DESCRIPTOR
This module is designed for practitioners who work in either acute or community care setting and will enable students to gain the knowledge and skills to manage patients with COPD, and asthma and differentiate between the two conditions.
The focus of this module is for you to be able to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to manage patients with Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and to have an understanding of the pathophysiology of COPD and its differentiation from Asthma and foster an understanding of the needs of patients with Asthma and COPD by developing your competence and confidence in assessing and managing the needs of these patients.
The module has been created to improve the care provided to patients with Asthma & COPD as it is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK. The module aims to improve the knowledge base of health professionals working with Asthma & COPD patients in hospital or community settings to enhance the level of patient care and will empower the health professional to make an early intervention and ensure treatment is of the highest standard.
MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and systematic understanding of the aetiology of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and its differentiation from Asthma
2. Critically analyse and evaluate current research and guidelines pertaining to the management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or Asthma patients.
3. Evaluate the impact of care pathways, multidisciplinary teams, and treatments for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or Asthma patients and make appropriate decisions in a systematic and individualised manner.
4.. Assess clients systematically and analyse needs utilising clinical and technical means and research evidence in relation to holistic care pathways in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or Asthma management.
