Module Details
Module Special Admissions Requirements
A full DBS clearance is required for commencing the module due to the practice requirements relating to work with young people and vulnerable adults.
Students must have secured a supervised placement on registering for this course. The placement must be able to offer them at least 40 hours experience during the teaching block in which the module is delivered.
Module Learning Strategies
This module incorporates three inter-related learning strategies. These are:
1. Tutor led sessions which will give students an overview of the requirements of the module and the key theories and concepts relating to working with groups in a youth and community work context (20 hours). Teaching methods used will include lectures, group work, experiential learning and class discussions.
2. The module will also require students to apply their learning in practice through undertaking 40 hours of placement, which will include working with a group of young people.
3. The independent study hours will allow for reading and research in relation to the module as well as reflection on their group work (90 hours).

Module Additional Assessment Details
A POSTER PRESENTATION. Length 500 WORDS weighted at 30%. (Learning Outcome 1)

A PORTFOLIO Length 1,500 WORDS weighted at 70%, Students will be required to plan, carry out and evaluate a project, event or learning activity with a group of young people (11-25) who they have been working with and then write a report on this. (Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4 & 5 and require a supervisors verification that 40 practice hours have been successfully completed)

Module Indicative Content
The module will include the exploration of:
Different types of group that a worker in a youth or community work context may work with including both formal and informal groups and the value of working with groups and informal learning;
Aspects of group work theory including models for assessing the stages of a group and their development and the models relating to the roles that people take in groups, leadership styles and their appropriate use and the skills needed to work effectively with a group;
Power in groups and the promotion of equality and anti-oppressive practice;
How to create an environment that enables effective group work.
