Module Indicative Content
This module introduces students to the history and philosophy of professional youth work and ministry, fostering an awareness of the varied organisational contexts in and beyond Christian settings. It aims to develop knowledge of a range of legal requirements and good practice concerning Child Protection, Health and Safety and an understanding of personal/ professional boundaries. The module begins with an introduction to a range of legal requirements and good practice concerning Child Protection, Health and Safety, and personal/ professional boundaries, during which both knowledge and skills are developed. The historical development of youth work and the Youth Service, including the Church's contribution to both, are explored and the resulting aims and roles of youth work and ministry identified. Core values of voluntary participation, informal education, empowerment and equality of opportunity are introduced and the boundaries and commonality between youth work and ministry examined. The requirements and responsibilities of youth work and ministry as a profession, professional practice and professionalism are explored and students encouraged to develop critical self-awareness. Awareness is raised concerning both current trends in youth work and ministry and Occupational Standards, competencies and assessment methods.
